How To Prevent Cockroach Infestations

Posted on

Cockroaches are a major health concern, as they are capable of carrying many different types of diseases. Additionally, they breed extremely rapidly, which makes any infestation a serious one that could balloon in size before you even know about it. Thankfully, there are a number of different things that you can do to prevent cockroaches from getting into and breeding within your home.

General Cleaning

The most important and least labor intensive thing that you can do to keep cockroaches out of your home is to keep your home clean and free of any food debris. This means that you should clean off countertops and tables, and keep any opened food packages in your kitchen securely closed and stored away. Be sure to have a trash can that is able to be sealed tightly to prevent cockroaches from getting into there, and take care to remove trash from your house regularly so as to not attract unwanted pests.

Appliance Maintenance

You should take care to move your large appliances, like your fridge and stove, out of the way so that you can clean underneath them. This is because large appliances create dark, warm places underneath them when in use, which become ideal areas for cockroach colonies to take hold. While you don't have to do this every week, cleaning out hidden areas at least once a month is a good way to prevent an infestation.

Diatomaceous Earth

You can purchase diatomaceous earth at most hardware and garden supply stores. It's a natural rock powder that will kill any insect that comes into contact with it by rapidly dehydrating it. This makes it effective at any type of pest control, not just at killing cockroaches. Sprinkle some diatomaceous earth around the points of entry of your home, such as your doors, windows, and along the walls of your basement.

Removing an Existing Infestation

Unfortunately, while all of the above methods are a great way of preventing cockroach infestations from even beginning within your home, it is not as easy to remove an already existing colony from your home. At the first sign of an infestation, you need to contact a professional, like one from BugOut Pest Control, immediately. Trying to use do-it-yourself methods won't be effective at wiping out the colony, and even a small amount of remaining cockroaches can quickly cause the population to explode once again. Professional extermination is the only way to effectively and completely remove cockroaches from your home.
